Permanent Diaconate PDF Print E-mail

Vatican II called for a renewal of Ministry, lay and ordained, in the Church.  As part of this renewal, the Council called for the restoration of the Diaconate.

The word 'deacon' comes from the Greek word which means 'service' and goes back to apostolic times.  St. Stephen, the first martyr, was a deacon as was St. Francis of Assisi.

Bishop John Buckley has decided to introduce this ancient order of the Permanent Diaconate in the Diocese of Cork and Ross.  This development will be in tandem with the growing involvement of lay people in the leadership life of parishes.

The Permanent Deacon share in the sacrament of orders.  As he brings the grace of his ordination to all aspects of his life, he can perform many of the functions currently associated with the priest viz. baptisms, weddings, funerals, preaching.

The Diaconite, following four years of preparation, is open to married and to single men; celibate men at 25, married men of 35, with an upper age limit of 63.

The introductory year begins in September and those interested are invited to contact their local priest or Canon Bertie Murphy, Carrigaline at 021 4371684

Outgoing Parish Assembly

The outgoing Parish Assembly will hold their final meeting this Tuesday night ih May at 7.30 p.m. in the Parish Office. We thank all the members who gave so much of their time, energy and talents to our parish.
Each parish assembly term is 3 years, yet most of the assembly generously gave 6 years which is the total time allotted. Many spoke of their time in the assembly, how it was enriching, sometimes challenging but always fun. They will be inspired to continue to participate in the life of the parish in different other ways. We pray God's blessing on them and their families.

Commissioning of the Parish Assembly

Next weekend our new Parish Assembly will be formally commissioned at the 6.30 p.m. Saturday Mass and the 11.00 a.m. Sunday Mass.
We pray God's blessing on them, that those who we nominated a few months ago, will help us to appreciate and understand that all of us are called to live our baptismal calling especially in community. The officers of the new pastoral assembly are Noel Hayes, chairperson, Deborah Barrett, secretary and Pat Q'Mahony, deputy chairman. We thank them for their generosity in accepting these positions and we pray God's blessing on all their endeavours.
Their first official meeting is on Tuesday 21st May at 7.30 p.m. in the Parish Office.

Easter Dues

We thank all who have contributed their Easter Dues. Your support is deeply appreciated, especially now during these difficult economic times for everyone.
The dues envelopes can now be placed into the safe in the wall at the back of the church. The envelopes can also be placed in the basket at the offertory collection, or given into the office or priest's house.
